Recipe Puppy Major Update

In the last month I have been working on some major updates to Recipe Puppy.

The first upgrade is the ingredient database. The previous version of Recipe Puppy had just under 800 unique ingredients. That number is now over 1,500. In addition I am constantly adding generic categories, so that a search for cheese will find a recipe with any type of cheese.

The next upgrade is the number of different websites Recipe Puppy searches. We went from 8 to 28 websites and added a few hundred thousand recipes(now searching 650k recipes). Additions include nibbledish.com, simplyrecipes.com, myrecipes.com, bigoven.com, whfoods.com, food.sify.com, bestrecipe.com.au, campbellkitchen.com, deliciousdays.com, recipe4living.com, recipe.aol.com, eatingwell.com, jamieoliver.com, cookeatshare.com, bbc.co.uk/food, kraftfoods.com, vegweb.com, recipeland.com, and 101cookbooks.com. Let me know if you have any suggestions for sites to add. I have 30 more in the queue.

The last upgrade was a small ui change. It is now easier to alter your search on the fly. You can specify an ingredient you have, an ingredient you must use, or an ingredient you want to exclude(or don’t have):

In other news, Recipe Puppy is growing significantly. Recipe now sees 4k visitors daily. Let me know what you think of the changes and/or if you have any suggestions.

    Hi Kris,
Good to see a site dedicated to search recipes based on ingredients. I came to see your site through delicious.
I have started a web site recently and focussed mainly on the healthy and quick to make lunch boxes. It has sections dedicated to kids as well as adults. All my recipes are purely vegetarian and with minimal use of oil.
You can browse through my site to see if you can include my site in your search engine.
Hope to hear from you soon.

I love your idea of excluding specific ingredients, or making some mandatory. I also like that you thought of making cheese a general catergory. Maybe you can make other general categories like leafy vegetables, or meat. But that could be too confusing to users.

Another search option I’d be interested in is ways of cooking things. Perhaps people have ingredients for something, but they don’t want to fry it. Or maybe they only eat raw food.

Also I’ve noticed some recipes call for water as an ingredient. I think most people have water in their house. There might be some other common ingredients that people often like flour or oil, that maybe you could have an option to include common ingredients so they don’t have to type them all out.
However, your ingredient database seems to rate recipes with common ingredients higher anyways, perhaps that is built into your search.
